"Having earned my undergrad degree at WSU, I was comfortable and familiar with the university. By having the entire program online was the main selling point for me to enroll for my Masters at WSU!"
"I earned my MED in CTE from Wayne State in May 2009. I have been employed in the Warren Consolidated Schools as a teacher since 2006. Through my experiences with colleagues and administrators, I found that my course work from the MED online program provided me with a significant advantage in knowledge and resources in CTE. The Trade & Industry Cooperative Educational program in the Warren Consolidated Schools was able to grow and thrive by the direct application of concepts and practices learned through the online MED program"
"The convenience of the completely online program allowed me to continue to work as a full time teacher and earn an in-depth understanding of the information presented in the MED in CTE program. I proclaim without reservation that the fully onilne MED in CTE program allowed me to cement my employment and expand the Technical Drawing classes and Trade & Industry Cooperative Educational program in the Warren Consolidated Schools!" -Scott Zmija, MED - CTE 2009
"The convenience of on-line courses allows you the flexibility to take classes in the time slots when you are available. The flexibility of the program's on-line learning features and its emphasis on active participation such as engaging in group discussions was beneficial because you learn more how to interact with other students in a teamwork environment. This environment allows us to share and formulate ideas to each other." -Aviva Alexander, M.Ed.-IT Grad, 2010
Dr. Geralyn Stephens, Career and Technical Education
How long have you been with the College of Education specifically the (CTE) Career and Technical Education program?
"I begin my 16th year with the College of Education in January 2011. I have been in the Career & Technical Education program the entire time!"
Having launched in 1997 what do you feel is (has been) the key to the longevity of CTE's fully online master's degree program?
"I believe students who select online courses desire flexibility. Students all across America have completed this Master's program. Enrollees have included students from Ohio, Washington and New York states."
What are your expectations and hopes for the CTE online master's degree program?
"By maximizing the use of technological resources available at WSU, I hope to continue to provide an opportunity to secure an advanced degree to students anywhere in the world."
Are you excited about the availabilty of online options and online courses increasing at Wayne State campus wide?
"Yes, ubiquitous instruction is no longer the future. It is the present. I, and my colleagues are working hard to ensure our online course offerings provide students with the rich, comprehensive educational experiences that is the common thread across all WSU courses and programs."
Dr. Karen McDevitt, Communication and New Media
How will the online certifificate in Communication and New Media benefit your current and prospective students?
"There are few if any aspects of our professional and personal lives that remain unaffected by new media technologies. By learning to better understand while simultaneously making practical use of new media, students have the opportunity to become sophisticated critics as well as effective users of new communication practices. New media crosses disciplines--from the arts to the sciences--and is now an integral part of both individual and institutional communication practices. Expanding our knowledge of these applications and procedures is not only beneficial but also, increasingly, essential."
How do you see your online certificate fitting into your overall strategic visions in the future?
"When it comes to new media, the future is now. The online certificate is a means for focusing on any number of communication practices in our so-called "digital era." Students have the opportunity to look closely at topics that range from Facebook to augmented reality, from sexting to cyberbullying, and from social media marketing to citizen journalism, to name but a few of the issues we cover. In addition, all of the classes offered for the completion of the certificate are available online. This is especially important in relation to the study of new media, and to higher education in general."
What are your expectations and hopes for the Communication and New Media certificate?
"It is expected that the certificate will continue to evolve in order to meet the growing needs of future students. Additionally, as technology enables the university to reach out to students in new and engaging ways, the certificate program will be at the forefront of incorporating such methods."
